by Sayantan Sen (Founder Digital Safety India, Parent of Sahyadri School)
We continued our discussion with students on Digital Footprint. In this terms case study based workshop, students grappled with ethical questions about digital responsibility as they explored the ripple effects of their online actions. By considering how digital footprints contribute to online reputations, students discovered the delicate balance between sharing authentic experiences and considering potential consequences.
Every action students take online – whether posting on social media, sharing photos, or browsing websites – leaves a digital footprint. More than ever, in today’s connected world these digital trails have real consequences. Tech companies collect this data, and both people and algorithms analyse it. Added to this, a student’s online identity is now a key part of their overall identity, influencing how they are perceived by others, both online and offline.
The workshop was designed to help students reflect on their behaviour online & also question assumptions—to think critically about creators’ intent. This can ultimately lead to more positive online experiences.
By the end of the workshop students were able to: Reflect on how our actions online can impact others’ reputations Consider the responsibilities we have for other people’s online reputation. Analyse how different parts of their digital footprint can lead others to draw conclusions – both positive and negative – about who they are. Examine a dilemma about digital footprints using a case study.
Parents play a critical role in guiding teenagers to build a positive, safe, and professional digital footprint by fostering open dialogue, modeling responsible online behavior, and educating them on long-term consequences.
