Screen Addiction - Classes 8 & 9
by Sayantan Sen (Founder Digital Safety India, Parent of Sahyadri School)
Continuing from where we left, we discussed how many children feel “addicted” to their phones or the apps and games they use. From our discussions, we saw how the tech we use every day is strategically designed to capture and hold our attention.
In our workshop we worked as teams to identify addictive and humane design in the apps, games, and the devices they use once they are back home.
By understanding both sides of tech design, students gain the knowledge and agency to make healthier choices in their digital lives—putting them back in control of their relationship with tech, not the other way around.
By the end of the workshop, children were able to:
Distinguish between addictive design and humane design features in digital media Identify addictive design tricks in commonly used apps Design solutions that transform addictive features into humane alternatives Reflect on how tech design can impact our well-being Identify healthy tech habits to help combat the impact of design tricks When it comes to screen time, parents play a crucial role in balancing children’s digital consumption by setting, modeling, and enforcing healthy screen-time limits to ensure physical and psychological well-being. Please find attached a Family sheet with tips to limit screen time during their vacation.
