Book Tasting at Phoenix Club

By Aadya Tyagi (Grade 11)

Many, many years ago, Anjali Akka, our English teacher, started a Book-Tasting club. The club introduced people to a variety of books. It enabled the participants to pick up a book they loved, share about it, and read aloud an excerpt from it. This club was predominantly for the junior school. The aim was to help students discover books they would want to read and encourage them to read more. After a brief break, owing to the COVID lockdown, Anjali Akka passed on the torch to the very students that grew up with the club. So like a phoenix, it rose out of the ashes, and the club was renamed the Phoenix Club.

Today, the Phoenix Club is a student-led initiative; however, it is now a club for senior school. Though some things about the club have changed, like the faces and it only being specific to senior school now, the spirit remains the same. The intention behind having a club like this is to provide a safe and comfortable space for people to recommend and discuss all things reading-related – from non-fiction books to graphic novels, to poetry.

The Phoenix Club meets every Saturday at 3:00 pm in the library. We, the club, are always open to members and visitors, so feel free to drop by!
