Grade 12 Sitar Performance

By Dimpika Mittal (Grade 11)

On the 23rd of August, the students of Grade 12 showcased their Musical talent through an enriching Sitar Performance. The event reflects months of dedication and rigorous practice.

Grade 12 Sitar

The performance began with an Aalap, introducing the chosen raga, Alhaiya Bilawal, which is set to a calm mood. The slow notes gradually evolved into a more rhythmic and lively Jod and Jahla section, displaying command over both melody and tempo.

The sitar players—Nanaki, Khushi, Ruhi, Rohit, Samruddhi, Shreya, Anushka and Hiya—demonstrated remarkable technique and skills; each note was played with precision and the subtle nuances of the Raga were brought out with grace and sensitivity.

Here are some of the experiences shared by some of the players:

Rohit Andhe:

Playing the sitar and practicing for the assembly gave me a purpose that nothing else has before; and the sitar continues to give me that purpose. In the music room, all of us bond together over our shared love for the instrument, and I’ve gotten to know so many people on a deeper level, thanks to sitar. Helping me with hand-eye-ear coordination and sitting in uncomfortable positions, exploring the nuances of classical music and definitely more than a life lesson or two from Girish sir’s anecdotes – that’s what sitar has given to me.

Shreya Ghadge:

Performing the raag we had learned over the last year and a half was an unforgettable experience. I was really nervous and excited at the same time. Once we started, it felt like a regular sitar class. And of course, performing with my batchmates made it even more special, especially with Ruhi, Nanki, and Samruddhi, as we have been learning sitar since 5th grade.

Khushi Virani:

Having learned the sitar for barely a year, this opportunity to showcase what I learned has taught me so much. From playing the same lines again and again, to playing even when my fingers hurt. It has taught me to be patient, focused, and respectful. Most importantly, Girish sir’s classes have taught me quite a bit about classical music itself. I am very glad that I have found a new passion and another way to deeply connect with music, something I love.
