Volleyball and Basketball Camps
By Rachit Agrawal and Hemant Kamalia (Grade 11)
Following Sahyadri tradition, the students of Grade 11 decided to take initiative and pass on what they have learned over the years. As soon as the monsoons gave us some relief, we organized a volleyball camp for girls of Grades 9 and 10, and a basketball camp for all the middle schoolers, both girls and boys.
The volleyball camp was held during PT time on the football turf and tennis court. The participants performed a variety of drills ranging from receiving, passing, serving and fingering. Despite the courts being partially submerged in water, there was no lack of enthusiasm in those who loved the sport. The camp helped students learn not only the basics of volleyball but also helped them improve their team coordination through long ongoing rallies, watching out for teammates, and working together to achieve a common goal. Overall, the camp was a success and it was a rewarding experience for us to share our skills with our juniors who have always looked up to us.
We planned the basketball camp during the same time for students of Grades 7 and 8 and it turned out to be an enriching experience. We spent the first week focusing on the basics like drills involving chest passes, V-dribbling and shooting with the proper form. As they got more comfortable, we moved on to some team building activities requiring them to collaborate and coordinate. Our main goal with this camp was not only to help them get over their fear of playing but also instilling a sense of passion for the game. We played short matches as well each day where they could apply the skills they had learnt. It was a delight playing alongside our juniors and getting to know our juniors better.
No matter the sport, what matters more than winning is to have fun with your friends and appreciate the beauty of the game itself. As J. Krishnamurti has said, “Real learning comes about when the competitive spirit has ceased.”
