Shambhu Hill Cleanup
By Aarav Mitra (Grade 12)
On a quiet Sunday morning, when most of us would usually be catching up on sleep, a group of students from Grades 11 and 12, along with Sachin Sir and Sekhar Sir, decided to spend it differently; by giving back to the environment. At 6:15 a.m., the team set out for Shambhu Hill, a place close to Sahyadri that is home to the Shiv Shambho Mahadeo temple.

What we found there was deeply disturbing; instead of being a serene space of worship, the hill was littered with everything imaginable: from plastic wrappers, bottles, and plates to alcohol bottles and even more shocking waste. The state of neglect had turned what should have been a peaceful local temple into a dumping ground.
Determined to make a difference, we wore latex gloves and masks and began the uphill and downhill cleanup. Over the next four hours, we collected a staggering 16 large bags of garbage. Every bag was carefully sent to a waste segregation unit near campus, ensuring that the cleanup was not just about removing trash but also about responsibly managing it. By 10:15 a.m., tired but proud, we returned to Sahyadri in style, riding back on a tractor. The morning had left us with more than just aching arms, it gave us the satisfaction of having done something worthwhile together.
The cleanup of Shambhu Hill was a sobering reminder of how human negligence can scar natural and spiritual spaces, but it also showed how collective effort can begin to restore them. This initiative was not just about cleanliness. It was about responsibility to our surroundings, to our community, and to the values we want to uphold as Sahyadri students.
