Basketball Match: Senior Girls
By Reya Shah (Grade 11)
The senior girls Basket Ball match where the girls of Grades 9 and 10 took on the girls of Grades 11 and 12 was by far the most awaited event for me. We, the Grades 11 and 12 team, had not practiced much together. Our goal was to enjoy the game and make the most of the experience. That said we had a few pre-match jitters and we then wondered whether we should have practiced more instead of showing up almost directly for the match.
The match began at 11:20 am, with the sun blazing overhead and the heat becoming more intense with each quarter. The first quarter ended neck and neck, with the Grades 11 and 12 team scoring 5 points and the Grades 9 and 10 team close behind with 4. Over the next 2 quarters, our team put up a strong defensive performance and did not allow the Grades 9 and 10 team to score a single point. At the same time, our offense completely dominated, with Siya stealing the show through her effortless two-pointers. By the end of the third quarter our score had reached the 30’s, while the Grade 9 and 10 team remained at 4. At that point the game was firmly in our control.
The fourth quarter was my favourite. Everyone began experimenting with different shots. I too attempted several three-pointers, although none of them went through the hoop. The music added great energy, and we were all vibing to the songs while playing. The audience was also enthusiastic throughout, and their constant cheering boosted our motivation. At the end of the fourth quarter we won the match 49 - 6. The blistering afternoon heat was a challenge during the game. It slowed us down at times. My energy levels too were affected. Overall, it was a great experience and I am already looking forward to playing again next year.
